Nanotechnology cluster in the region is formed by three microclusters: Advanced materials platform, aerosol technology and photonics clusters, all emerging from innovative research in Tampere University of Technology (TUT) and its active cooperation with the companies.

Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at TUT is the leading nanophotonics research centre in Finland. Having played a seminal role in the formation of several high-profile spin-off companies, ORC has close ties with the industry and provides services for business such as processing and characterization of nanophotonic components.

Collaboration with the industry and spin-offs

ORC has been exceptionally successful in developing new technologies and transferring know-how to industrial use and offers a wide range of services for business. One of the most visible societal impacts of ORC is the establishing of laser diode manufacturing industry in Finland. Companies, such as Modulight and Corelase have their origins in research carried out at ORC.

Nanocellulose - the supermaterial of the future

TUT carries a leading edge research in nanocellulose for bioeconomy in collaboration with Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT, Aalto University, and the University of Vaasa. This multidisciplinary DWoC- team is testing how design and materials research can collaborate in practice. Textile applications, such as 3D printing of cellulose, are being developed and the application of cellulose-based materials in the built environment is being studied. In addition to new materials and products, new types of textile manufacturing equipment and processes are being developed. Tekes's funding will enable various stakeholders to collaborate, experiment and seek innovations to create new business ideas and opportunities. Visit DWoC website, Cellulose from Finland to read more about nanocellulose and its potential technical applications.
